Women Build

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build is a week long event, March 1-8, the week leading up to International Women’s Day. The event calls on women to raise a hammer to spotlight the need for safe and affordable housing and provides the tools for women to empower and educate themselves on skills used when repairing and restoring homes.

Home Builders Blitz

Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz is held in the Fall and brings together professional home builders from all over the county for one shared purpose – to build safe and affordable housing for families in need of a decent place to call home.

Collegiate Challenge

Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge is an alternative school break opportunity for high school and college students. Students serve on the build site and learn about substandard living conditions and how affordable housing builds strength, stability, and self-reliance for homeowners. Students see beyond the home being built or repaired, to the people behind it – macro issues on a micro-scale.

Apostles Build

Habitat for Humanity’s Apostles Build project calls people to leave the pews of the church and to serve in the way that the original apostles served. Twelve churches, or coalitions of churches, come together to fully fund and build a Habitat for Humanity home for a local family.

Student Build

Local high school students work alongside fellow classmates and future homeowners on a Habitat project. This is a rewarding community service experience for students who volunteer their time to help families move out of unacceptable housing into decent, affordable housing. The goal is to educate the younger generation of thinkers and doers about affordable housing needs and the importance of financial stability.

Join a Committee

Homeowner Selection & Support Committee

The Homeowner Selection and Support Committee (HSSC) assists Habitat for Humanity (HFH) in the critical function of selecting qualified applicants to become HFH homeowners. Members support future homeowners through the processes of application through homeownership. Committee members attend application process meetings, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, and other community events to support applicants and HIPS.

As part of the support function of the committee, individual members serve as “advisors” to specific HIPS as assigned. When serving in this capacity, the member establishes regular contacts with the HIP and serves as a liaison between the HIP and HFH. These relationships may extend beyond the day homeowners move into their new homes.

FAQ

About Volunteering the Construction Site

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Volunteers must be 16 years old or older. Volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a youth waiver signed by a parent, with them to the construction site on their scheduled build day. Minor volunteers may not operate power tools or work at heights above six feet. Minor volunteers must be supervised by a parent or guardian while on the construction site.

When can I volunteer for construction?

The construction sites are typically open to volunteers on Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 2pm. We do not have a consistent schedule, so the best way to find construction volunteer opportunities is to email [email protected].

What if I have never done any construction before?

All skill levels are welcome! We assume no skills or prior construction experience. The construction supervisor will provide plenty of instruction and oversight throughout the day.

What kind of work will we do?

All sorts of work takes place on a Habitat construction site. Please be prepared to assist in whatever the day’s tasks may be and remember that every job helps to build homes! If you have special skills, don’t be shy! We are looking for Team Leaders with special skills. Please contact us if you are interested in participating in this way. Let the construction staff know upon your arrival in case you can be of unique assistance. While tasks often include using power tools or working at heights, volunteers will not be expected to do any task that makes them uncomfortable.

Should I bring anything?

We recommend bringing sunscreen, bug spray, and lunch or some snacks (unless lunch is provided by your volunteer group). If you have any personal tools you’d prefer to use over the ones we provide, feel free! For example, a hammer, tape measure, carpenter’s pencil, work gloves, safety glasses, etc. We do ask that you do not bring any power tools from home, we have plenty on-site for you to use. St Lucie Habitat will provide water, gloves, safety goggles, and hard hats, plus any necessary tools to perform the tasks of the day.

What should I wear?

Closed-toe/heel shoes or boots are required. Volunteers who do not come to the site with the proper footwear will not be able to participate. Wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather conditions and that you don’t mind getting dirty or stained. We recommend wearing layers so that you can be comfortable throughout the day.
