Playhouse Build 2023

All in a day! This year’s St. Lucie Habitat’s Playhouse Build held at Treasure Coast Lexus on April 1st saw both the building of five amazing, creative playhouses and the presentation of the playhouses to families of local heroes – first responders from the Fort Pierce Police Department, Port St. Lucie Police Department, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Lucie County Fire District. A big thank you to Treasure Coast Lexus for hosting our Playhouse Build. And a thank you to our sponsor- Law Firm of Lytal Reiter Smith Ivey and Fronrath.

The Playhouse Build was truly a community-wide effort. Bob Cenk of CeCe Contracting acted as project manager – he recruited members of the Treasure Coast Builder’s Association as crew leaders tasked with directing the teams in the construction of the playhouses. The crew leaders were Joe Ciaravino from Coastal Building Contractors, Scott McCracken from Sawhorse Construction, Niki Norton from N2 Architecture & Design, Jim Brann from The Porch Factory, and Sam Hjalmeby from Samuel Construction Group. Cenk also connected with local businesses who generously donated the materials: Builder’s FirstSource donated the plywood, Steve Frontera Roofing gave the shingles, Sherwin Williams Paint provided the paint, and Texas Roadhouse donated the lunch. To ensure all was ready for build day on April 1, students at Project Lift pre-cut the wood to form the walls and roofs of the playhouses, as well as applied a coat of prime.

The crew leaders each had their own team comprised of Project Lift students, first responder co-workers from the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Fort Pierce Police Department and their Explorers, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, a retired firefighter from St. Lucie County Fire District, and volunteers from Treasure Coast Builders Association, St. Lucie Habitat Homeowner-in-Progress Partners, State Farm, co-workers of the crew leaders and others who transformed the playhouses from wooden structures to creations straight out of a child’s imagination. On April 1, at the Treasure Coast Lexus auto dealership in Fort Pierce, the playhouses were built and unveiled in front of the delighted first responder families. The kids immediately took to their customized playhouses, with themes including Cocomelon, a mermaid and astronaut, and a monster truck one.
